Studying a book of the Bible in depth can be an exciting thing! God’s word is essential and sufficient for life and godliness. Yet God has given his church an awesome gift in scholars who can share their thoughts and expositions on the different books of the Bible. Here in the Apollos Old Testament Commentary Series, we have just that from David Firth on the books of 1 & 2 Samuel.
I have to say from the start that this is one of the most in-depth commentaries I have read (not that I’ve read much). The Apollos OT Series has done a thorough job in helping others to understand the truths of God’s word. To get you familiar with the series, like most others, it begins with an Introduction section, which overviews the issues such as date, authorship, sources, and looks at the central themes in the book(s). Firth gives us an annotated translation of 1 and 2 Samuel as a basis for the following commentary. There are three major sections for each passage. Firth speaks into the Form and Structure of the passage at hand, which considers the context of the passage and any critical issues that have arisen. The Comment section provides exegesis for the meaning of the passage. And the Explanation section offers a full exposition of the message of the passage. All of these combined offer a fantastic analysis, walk-through, and explanation of the entire book.
This commentary offers so much. Specifically regarding 1 and 2 Samuel, Firth maps out the history of Israel and the beginning of its kingship with Saul and on to King David. This can easily be considered one of the most crucial areas of history for Israel and has so many key passages (such as the establishment of the Davidic Covenant) that have bearing on God’s plan of redemption and even on our lives today.
One of the things I appreciate most about this commentary is the depth that these scholars are willing to go into. When I say depth, I don’t mean technical, over-your-head, type of material. I only mean a thorough explanation and examination of the text at hand. I learned so much from taking this off the shelf and digging through it as a studied specific passages in 1 and 2 Samuel. This is great for just about anyone, especially if you are serious student of God’s Word, specifically the Old Testament.
I highly encourage you to check out this series! What a great tool for the believer’s belt!
