The church needs to be fresh in understanding how to determine false teaching and doctrine. Just as in the first century, there are numerous false teachings infiltrating the church. What can/should we do about it? For one, we can be as informed as we are able, and Geivett and Pivec give us a glimpse into one of the most prevalent movements working its way in the world of Christianity today. It is the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR).
You may have never heard of it, but you may be familiar with some of its leaders (Peter Wagner, Bill Johnson, and Rick Joyner to name a few). What this book does is to educate the church on this fairly recent movement and how we should respond to it biblically. NAR basically affirms the ongoing office of apostles and prophets (not to be confused with the spiritual gift of prophecy) within the church as authoritative leaders and movers, that act on so-called new revelation given to them by God. What the apostles say and proclaim is on the same level as God’s Word. With this presupposition, NAR operates and mobilizes for war against the enemy.
This book includes many more details about the movement, as well as its impact on the church, arguments used by NAR to defend their positions, biblical truth about apostles and prophets and how this contrasts with NAR, and biblical analyses of NAR’s approach to miracle-working and new revelation. All of this culminates in a greater understanding of NAR and how subtly dangerous it has been and could be for the church. It also does a great job in keeping NAR separate from Pentecostalism and other charismatic, continuationist movements.
This book is extremely helpful if you are interested in false teachings, which we all should be as we seek to know the truth of God’s Word. False teachings can be subtle, and we see NAR influence in many mainstream Christian circles, especially in the popular worship groups and Christian influencers around the world. How can we rightly respond to these issues if we know nothing about them?
Grab this book if you want to know more about God’s Word and how to respond to this worldwide movement called the New Apostolic Reformation.
