It is an understatement to say that the Transgender debate has been a hot topic in the past decade. It is an issue that has become so prevalent as to totally change the culture and thinking about human sexuality. As believers, we know that this issue must be addressed. But how and why? Branch has given us a short book that takes an in depth look into the transgender question, its history, and how both science and Scripture have satisfying answers.
The book asks the question: “What is a knowledgable, faithfully biblical response to transgenderism?” Everyone of us needs to understand this issue better as we interact with the world. The chances are increasing that we will have friends, family, and neighbors that either struggle with gender dysphoria or are staunch proponents of transgenderism. This books looks at many different topics, such as the history of transgenderism, the growing vocabulary that surrounds a transgender lifestyle, how genetics and the brain factors into the equation, and it also looks at the consequences of hormonal treatments and reassignment surgeries. All of these topics are addressed with Scripture at the forefront, showing how these choices are incompatible with a Christian worldview.
One of the most important points made in this book is the difference between someone struggling with gender dysphoria and someone who embraces transgenderism. One is a struggle just like any other, while the other is sin and blatantly living in contrast to God’s original design. This different is crucial, knowing that so many people that struggle with gender dysphoria are categorized as transgender, when in reality they may be depending on the sanctifying work of Christ as they struggle with these issues.
Each chapter is jam-packed with helpful information and arguments that will aid us in speaking to and loving our transgender or pro-transgender friends and neighbors. At the end of every chapter are “key points” that highlight several main topics addressed previously. I do believe every Christian needs to read this book. God designed things to be a certain way, and that includes human sexuality. We need to learn to affirm God’s image confidently to a world that has gone astray. This book is a great resource as we seek to grow in this area, learning to respond to our transgender neighbors with both love and truth.
